Professional Learning Community refers to a group of individuals who are committed to conducting research or learning a particular subject. Research is done extensively, so that the right level of information is ascertained to increase knowledge on the subject. The basic aim of a PLC is to extend the classroom environment into the community and bring ideas and knowledge of community members into the classroom so that student curriculum is enhanced and enriched by varied experience and greater understanding. It seeks to bring together teachers, administrators, and students together into the learning process.

The Professional Learning Community has certain unique characteristics. Members experiment with various ideas for the process of enhancing knowledge and also because it gives them the opportunity to learn. They discuss and interact with one another to bring about solutions to problems. In the process of understanding various problem issues, they work as a ream and reflect on various aspects to bring about good understanding of the subject matter.

The essence of the working behind Professional Learning Community is that people learn gain more knowledge and understanding of matters when working together. This is not a new concept as it is often seen in classroom how teachers promote team work within students, but what should be also understood is that extending this concept to themselves can actually help to enhance student learning environment and also enrich their teaching experience.
